I should be telling you all about my experience in San Diego last week. Yes, I was in San Diego during the devastating wildfires. Fortunately, we were at the Youth Specialties conference in Mission Valley, one of the areas not scourched by the fires. There are a ton of things I could touch on about the conference itself. That was until I watched a documentary tonight entitled, STARBUCKING. It is the true story of Winter (that is not his real name), an eccentric 30 something who had a strange, yet ambitious, dream: to visit each and every Starbucks in the world. The problem: there are 5,000 Starbucks in the world and five new franchises open a day on average. Yet this journey is more than about Starbucks. It is about a man who is wired on caffeine. It is about a man who didn't want to work each and every day to survive. Watching the movie, I did not know if I was more sad for Winter than inspired. He has a cool website: http://www.starbuckseverywhere.net/. He has a picture of each Starbucks he has visited, including all of the stores in Portland. The funny thing: I am reading a new book by Len Sweet called THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO STARBUCKS. Sweet thinks the church needs to look to the coffee giant for spiritual inspiration. Maybe the church needs to look to Winter to realize how normal we can actually be.
