Happy 4th of July! With the continuous increase in gas prices and my short 4 mile commute to work in my SUV, Mo bought me a bike for an early birthday present. Bikes are so complicated now. My bike is what they call a hybrid and it can be used for cross country and street riding. It has about 56 different gears a rider can shift into. I tested it out this afternoon. I learned two things during my journey. One, I am no longer 15 years old (this last time I rode a bike on a regular basis), and second, NW Portland is NOT flat. On another note, I found it interesting the controversial Christian senator, Jessie Helms passed away today (July 4th). If you are not familiar with Helms, check out some articles on the Internet. I don't agree with many of his stances, yet his imprint on American Right Wing politics is undeniable and will be part of the religious right worldview as long as there is a religious right. I have to give him credit for sticking to his beliefs under a load of criticism. The far right viewpoint has lost some of it strongest leaders the last five years in Helms, the Rev. Jerry Falwell, and senator Strom Thurmond. May Helms rest in peace in the presence of out Creator.
